The 22-year-old scholar transport driver arrested over the Vanderbijlpark crash that killed 14 learners has abandoned his bail application, as police continue investigations into the tragic incident.
Ayanda Dludla has abandoned his bail application following his arrest in connection with the deadly Vanderbijlpark scholar transport crash that has claimed 14 lives.
The 22-year-old on Thursday appeared briefly before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court, where it emerged that he would no longer be pursuing bail. He is charged with 14 counts of murder and 3 counts of attempted murder. The matter was postponed to 5 March 2026.
Dludla was behind the wheel of a minibus scholar transport that collided with a truck on Monday in Vanderbijlpark. The crash initially claimed multiple lives at the scene, with several children rushed to hospital in critical condition. Authorities later confirmed that two more children succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to 14.
Gauteng education authorities and community leaders have paid tribute to the learners who lost their lives, describing them as young futures cut short far too soon. Counseling services have been made available to affected families, learners and school staff.
Police investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with authorities expected to examine factors including road conditions, vehicle roadworthiness and compliance with traffic regulations.
Dludla remains in custody as the case continues.
