Heavy fog blankets Johannesburg, motorists urged to exercise caution
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has issued a safety alert as dense fog reduces visibility across the city, urging drivers to slow down and remain vigilant on the roads.
Motorists travelling across Johannesburg have been warned to take extra precautions following the onset of heavy fog and mist that is significantly affecting visibility.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) issued an advisory calling on drivers to prioritise safety amid the hazardous driving conditions.
Authorities have urged motorists to reduce speed and adjust their driving to suit the limited visibility. Drivers are also encouraged to maintain a safe following distance to account for sudden stops, especially in high-traffic areas.
In addition, the use of low-beam headlights has been strongly recommended to improve visibility without causing glare. High-beam headlights should be avoided, as they can reflect off the fog and further obscure vision.
The JMPD has also cautioned motorists to remain alert for pedestrians and slower-moving vehicles, which may be harder to spot under these conditions.
“Drive safely and ensure you arrive at your destination alive,” the department emphasised.
The advisory comes as weather conditions continue to fluctuate, with motorists urged to stay informed and exercise patience on the roads.
