Western Cape closes all schools following severe weather
All public schools across the Western Cape will be closed on 12 May 2026 following a safety decision by the provincial education authorities due to ongoing severe weather conditions affecting the region.
The Western Cape Government has on Monday confirmed that the Western Cape Education Department has ordered the closure of all schools in the province on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, as heavy rain and disruptive weather systems continue to impact large parts of the region.
The department said that the decision was taken in the interest of learner and educator safety after weather warnings indicated potentially hazardous conditions, including flooding and difficult travel routes.
Parents and guardians have been advised to ensure that learners remain safe at home, while schools are expected to resume normal operations once conditions improve.
The South African Weather Service has issued Orange Level 5 and Yellow Level 2 weather warnings for damaging winds expected to affect parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape, with possible disruptions to transport, infrastructure and coastal activities.
