Independent Media’s Public Editor Press Code

At South African Daily, we believe journalism is a public service — not a product. Our work is built on truth, fairness, and respect for every South African.
This is the standard we hold ourselves to every day.
1. We Tell the Truth
We check our facts — twice. Accuracy matters more to us than being first. If we make a mistake, we will correct it openly and quickly.
2. We Are Fair and Balanced
Every story has more than one side. We give everyone a fair chance to be heard, and we never twist facts to fit an agenda.
3. We Are Independent
No politician, company, or advertiser tells us what to write. Our loyalty is to the reader and the truth, not to power or profit.
4. We Are Accountable
We take responsibility for what we publish. If you think we have got something wrong, you can hold us to account — and we will listen.

5. We Protect Our Sources
When someone shares information in confidence, we protect their identity unless the law or the public interest requires otherwise.
6. We Respect Privacy and Dignity
We do not invade people’s private lives unless it is in the public interest. We report on sensitive issues — like crime or trauma — with care, compassion, and respect.
7. We Do Not Discriminate
We will never publish or promote hate speech, prejudice, or discrimination. Our newsroom reflects South Africa’s diversity — and so do our stories.
8. We Keep Facts and Opinion Separate
We make it clear when something is opinion or analysis. Our readers should always know what is fact and what is commentary.
9. We Use Photos and Videos Honestly
Images tell powerful stories, but they must always tell the truth. We do not alter visuals to mislead, and we use graphic content only when there is a clear public reason to do so.
10. We Serve the Public Interest
We publish stories that matter — stories that expose wrongdoing, hold power to account, and strengthen democracy. Our work is for the people, not for clicks.
11. We Believe in a Transforming South Africa
We are committed to representing the full spectrum of South African life — its challenges, hopes, and voices. We tell stories that help the country grow and understand itself.
Our Promise
We do not chase headlines. We chase the truth.
At South African Daily, we report with honesty, humility, and heart — for the readers who trust us, and for the South Africa we all share.
