Severe thunderstorm warning issued for North West and Gauteng
SAWS warns of heavy rain, damaging winds and possible flooding as severe thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the country.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to impact the North West province on Thursday.
According to SAWS, conditions are favourable for intense storms that could bring heavy downpours, strong and damaging winds, hail, excessive lightning and significant rainfall. These weather conditions raise the risk of flooding and may cause damage to both formal and informal settlements, as well as infrastructure.
Additional warnings have been issued for Gauteng, the eastern parts of the Northern Cape and parts of Limpopo, excluding the south-eastern areas of the province. These regions could also experience severe thunderstorms that may lead to localised flooding, affecting roads, low-lying areas and bridges, and potentially causing damage to infrastructure and vulnerable communities.
Looking ahead, the forecast for Friday and Saturday points to partly cloudy and cool to cold conditions, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. Rainfall is expected to be more widespread over the Northern Cape on Friday.
SAWS has urged residents and stakeholders to stay updated by monitoring official forecasts and warnings, as conditions may change and further updates will be issued.
