Hyde Park shooting victim to receive R400,000
Sipho Mahlangu, injured in a Hyde Park shooting involving Bellarmine Mugabe, has already received R250,000, with more compensation expected before sentencing.
Sipho Mahlangu, who was shot during an incident at a Hyde Park residence in Johannesburg, is set to receive a total of R400,000 in compensation.
The shooting involved Bellarmine Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and his cousin Tobias Matonhodze.
According to the investigating officer, Mahlangu has already been paid R250,000, with an additional R150,000 still outstanding.
The payment is believed to form part of a settlement linked to the case, although full details have not been disclosed.
Meanwhile, the State is pushing for direct imprisonment sentences for Mugabe and Matonhodze. Mugabe is facing proposed sentences of 12 months’ direct imprisonment for pointing a firearm and a further 12 months for contravening the country’s laws.
For Matonhodze, the State is seeking significantly heavier penalties. These include five years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder, 12 years for a firearm-related offence, and another 12 years for defeating the ends of justice. He also faces a fine for ammunition-related charges, as well as 12 months’ direct imprisonment for contravening the law.
The matter has been postponed to 29 April 2026 for sentencing.
