The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has deployed troops to the Cape Flats to support police efforts in curbing escalating gang violence, drug trafficking and restoring stability in affected communities.
Deployed SANDF soldiers are supporting the South African Police Service (SAPS) in high-crime areas starting on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the year-long deployment to five provinces during his State of the Nation Address in February.
The Cape Flats have endured decades of gang-related violence. Soldiers are being deployed as a “force multiplier” to stabilise hotspots while police carry out intelligence-driven operations, as troops themselves do not have arrest powers.
Government officials have stressed the need for the deployment to be intelligence-led and coordinated with SAPS. While the arrival of troops offers temporary respite, experts caution that military deployment is no silver bullet.
