Nine law enforcement officers in court over corruption and extortion charges
Nine officers from JMPD, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic have been remanded in custody after appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on serious corruption-related charges.
Nine law enforcement officers appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 April 2026, facing charges of corruption, extortion and trespassing.
They were arrested in the early hours of Thursday, 23 April 2026, by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Serious Corruption Investigation unit in various parts of Gauteng.
The accused include six officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, two members of the South African Police Service, and one Gauteng Traffic warden.
In a statement the Hawks said, the group allegedly arrived at a warehouse in Crown Mines where they conducted a search and discovered a box of reportedly expired dye. It is further alleged that the officers then attempted to solicit money from the complainant, who reported the incident to the Hawks.
The case has been postponed to 28 April 2026 for a formal bail application. All nine accused have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance.
