Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni has been re-elected with a commanding majority, extending his rule that began in 1986 after elections conducted amid reports of violence and alleged irregularities.
Veteran leader Yoweri Museveni has been declared the overwhelming winner of Uganda’s presidential election, extending his decades-long grip on power after a vote marked by reports of violence and allegations of irregularities.
Museveni, a former military officer who has served as Uganda’s president since 1986, secured the decisive mandate he was seeking amid growing debate over succession as he advanced in age.
Announcing the results at a ceremony in Kampala on Saturday, Uganda’s Electoral Commission said the 81-year-old won just under 72% of the vote. His closest rival, musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, garnered 24% of the ballots cast.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has praised the manner in which Uganda’s elections were conducted and congratulated Museveni on his re-election.
