The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Cllr Andile Mngwevu, is missing after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Mozambique’s severely affected Chokwé area.
The City of Ekurhuleni has on Sunday confirmed that the MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Cllr Andile Mngwevu, is currently missing following an incident in Mozambique, where a vehicle in which he was travelling was swept away by floodwaters.
Phakamile Mbengashe, Head of Department for Communications, Marketing and Tourism, said Mngwevu had been in Mozambique’s Chokwé area, which has been hit by severe flooding.
“A South African Rescue Mission deployed to Mozambique, has established contact with one of the five individuals who were travelling in the vehicle at the time it was swept away,” said Mbengashe.
The condition and location of MMC Mngwevu and the other passengers have not yet been confirmed. The South African Mission is in ongoing contact with Mozambican authorities and emergency responders in the affected area. Meanwhile, the Office of the Executive Mayor, in coordination with the national government, has arranged support for MMC Mngwevu’s spouse, who arrived in Mozambique last night.
“The City respectfully appeals to the public and the media to afford the Mngwevu family privacy and space, and to refrain from speculation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those affected as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances,” said Mbengashe.
