Legendary isicathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has announced the passing of longtime member Albert Mazibuko at the age of 77, paying tribute to his decades-long contribution to music and his role in shaping the group’s global legacy.
The internationally acclaimed group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has confirmed the death of its longtime member Albert Mazibuko, who passed away at the age of 77.
Born in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, Mazibuko was a respected elder, cultural custodian, and a key figure in the group for more than five decades. He joined Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 1969 and became an integral part of its distinctive sound, helping to build its reputation both locally and internationally.
In a statement Ladysmith Black Mambazo said Mazibulo was known as “the librarian,” he was admired for his deep knowledge of the group’s history and his mentorship to fellow members. His humility, wisdom, and quiet strength earned him respect within the music community.
Through his work, he helped carry forward the vision of founder Joseph Shabalala, ensuring that the richness of isicathamiya music reached audiences around the world.
The group described his passing as the end of an era and extended condolences to his family, friends, and all those touched by his life and legacy.
