Authorities arrested 934 motorists for drunk driving between Thursday and Saturday, reflecting a significant rise from last year as traffic officials intensified efforts to improve road safety during the Easter holiday period.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said 934 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol between Thursday and Saturday during the Easter weekend.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said this marks an increase of 263 arrests compared to the same period last year. He attributed the rise to intensified law enforcement operations aimed at reducing road fatalities.
“Drunk driving remains a major concern during the Easter long weekend. Arrests for driving under the influence increased by 39 percent as officers strengthened efforts to save lives,” Zwane said.
The number of impounded vehicles also rose significantly, with 1,215 vehicles seized compared to 923 in the same period last year — an increase of 31.6 percent. Zwane noted that many of these vehicles were operating without permits or violating permit conditions as some drivers sought to make quick profits.
However, there was a notable improvement in vehicle roadworthiness. The number of discontinued vehicles dropped by nearly 30 percent, with 688 vehicles taken off the road compared to 979 last year.
Zwane added that traffic authorities will continue monitoring major and alternative routes as the long weekend draws to a close.
Motorists have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement and follow road rules, with officials reminding drivers that arriving late is better than not arriving at all.
