Hundreds of Ghanaians repatriated amid rising anti-Immigration tensions in South Africa
Around 300 Ghanaian nationals have arrived at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport for repatriation to Ghana as anti-immigration protests continue in parts of South Africa.
The first group of approximately 300 Ghanaian nationals has arrived at OR Tambo International Airport ahead of their voluntary repatriation to Ghana amid growing anti-immigration tensions in South Africa.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, said the repatriation process is being coordinated jointly by Ghanaian and South African authorities.
According to Quashie, more than 800 Ghanaian nationals have already registered for the evacuation programme, with additional flights expected to depart in the coming days as authorities work to assist citizens wishing to return home.
The repatriation follows increasing anti-immigration protests in some communities across South Africa, where concerns over undocumented foreign nationals have intensified.
Quashie also confirmed that Ghanaians who had previously been arrested over documentation-related issues in South Africa have since been released and are expected to travel back to Ghana as part of the programme.
