The Gauteng Department of Education has praised outgoing MEC Matome Chiloane for his commitment to improving education, highlighting his role in expanding access, strengthening teaching, and supporting learners across the province.
The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed its appreciation to former MEC Matome Chiloane for his dedicated service and strong leadership during his time overseeing the province’s basic education sector.
Chiloane served on the Gauteng Executive Council as MEC for Education from October 2022 to June 2024, before being appointed MEC for Education, Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation from July 2024 until April 2026.
“He rose to the challenge of leading one of Gauteng’s most critical portfolios and worked tirelessly to advance quality education for every learner, support every educator, and serve every stakeholder across our communities,” the department said in a statement on Thursday.
“Under his leadership, the department remained focused on strengthening teaching and learning, expanding access to quality education, and equipping learners with the skills and opportunities needed for the future.
Chiloane championed an education system that unlocks the potential of township communities, nurtures innovation, and prepares young people to participate meaningfully in the economy.
“We wish him strength and success on his new journey. We thank him for his commitment, his passion for education, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind in the Gauteng Department of Education,” the department said.
