Newly appointed Gauteng Finance MEC Nkululeko Dunga has pledged to restore political and administrative stability following his swearing-in in Johannesburg, after a cabinet reshuffle by Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
Newly appointed Gauteng Finance MEC Nkululeko Dunga has pledged to restore stability within the provincial government, saying efforts will focus on ensuring both political and administrative cohesion to build a functional and effective administration.
Dunga was officially sworn in as the new Finance MEC on Thursday, with Gauteng Deputy High Court Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba presiding over the ceremony held in Johannesburg.
He takes over from Lebogang Maile, who’s now MEC for Education, Sport, Arts and Culture. Dunga is the first EFF member to serve on the Gauteng Executive Council.
The changes come after Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.
Lesufi says the appointment is expected to improve relations with the ANC’s coalition partners and enhance governance in the province.
He acknowledged that managing the legislature has been challenging due to coalition dynamics, with significant time spent consulting and negotiating with other parties instead of focusing on service delivery. Lesufi noted that this has slowed policy implementation and the province’s ability to address urgent issues.
He added that bringing the Economic Freedom Fighters into the executive council is aimed at strengthening stability, both at a provincial level and in several municipalities governed through multi-party coalitions.
