The Limpopo Premier has confirmed that one of the conjoined twins has died, while the surviving brother is recovering well after separation surgery at Mankweng Hospital.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has on Friday confirmed that one of the conjoined twin boys born in January has died from organ failure following a complex separation procedure, while the surviving twin is recovering well.
The twins were born attached in the abdomen at Mankweng Hospital outside Polokwane and underwent a delicate surgery performed by a team of specialists. The operation was initially declared a success, offering hope for both infants.
However, one of the boys later died due to complications. Speaking with SABC on Friday morning, Ramathuba assured the public that the surviving twin is in a stable condition and responding positively to medical care.
The remaining infant continues to receive specialised treatment under close supervision. Authorities have extended condolences to the family, while also acknowledging the efforts of the medical team who handled the high-risk procedure.
