China’s Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, has reaffirmed Beijing’s strong support for the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, calling South Africa’s presidency an opportunity to amplify the “voice of the Global South” on global governance.
China has publicly reaffirmed its support for South Africa’s G20 presidency, with Ambassador Wu Peng hailing the summit as a pivotal moment for the Global South. Speaking at the Global South Media Think Tank Forum in Johannesburg, Wu described the “remarkable rise of the Global South” as one of the defining trends of our time.
Wu emphasised that this G20, held on African soil for the first time, offers a unique chance for South Africa and its peers to project a distinct African imprint on global economic governance.
He acknowledged recent reports that some world leaders might not attend, but stressed that China’s commitment remains unwavering: “China firmly supports South Africa’s G20 presidency … We look forward to the summit sending out a strong voice of the Global South.”
Wu’s remarks also tied into broader China-Africa cooperation: he praised deepening trade ties, infrastructure partnerships and shared development goals, framing the G20 as a platform to reform global economic rules in favour of developing nations.
