Johannesburg authorities have announced a coordinated joint operation on Saturday, with key roads like the N1, M1, N12, Rivonia Road, Jan Smuts Avenue and Nasrec Road to be temporarily closed from 09:00 to 13:00 as part of security preparations for the upcoming G20 Summit.
Johannesburg motorists are being warned to expect significant disruptions this Saturday, as a coordinated multi-agency traffic operation will see major road closures and lane restrictions across key routes in the city.
The temporary restrictions, which will run from 09:00 to 13:00, are part of security and traffic-management measures in the lead-up to the G20 Leaders’ Summit. The exercise is being conducted jointly by the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Gauteng Traffic Police, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and SAPS.
High-security routes affected include national highways N1, M1, and N12, as well as central city arterials such as Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, and Jan Smuts Avenue. Urban roads like Melrose Boulevard, Oxford Road and Nasrec Road will also be impacted.
To ease the disruption, alternative routes have been recommended:
In Roodepoort: Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road or Ontdekkers Road instead of Hendrik Potgieter Road
n FourwaIys: use Main Road, Cedar Road, or Witkoppen Road
In Sandton, Rosebank and Parktown: use side-streets parallel to Jan Smuts or Oxford, including 11th Avenue and Corlett Drive
In southern Johannesburg (Riverlea, Nasrec, Ormonde): Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Soweto Highway, N17, Aerodrome Road and Adcock Ingram Road are suggested alternatives.
Traffic officials say there will be clear signage, police officers on hand, and real-time updates to guide road users. Access for emergency and essential services will be maintained throughout the operation.
Authorities urge all motorists to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time, and avoid using the affected roads during the closure window if possible.
