Basic education confirms special school holiday on 15 June 2026
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that schools across South Africa will be closed on Monday, 15 June 2026, as a special school holiday ahead of Youth Day commemorations on 16 June.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has reminded parents, guardians, learners, educators, and stakeholders that Monday, 15 June 2026, has been designated as a special school holiday in accordance with the approved 2026 school calendar.
The announcement comes as South Africa prepares to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic 16 June 1976 student uprising, a pivotal event in the country's struggle for freedom and democracy.
Youth Day, observed annually on 16 June, honours the bravery and sacrifice of the young people who stood against apartheid-era education policies.
As Tuesday, 16 June 2026, is a nationally recognised public holiday, schools nationwide will remain closed on both Monday and Tuesday. Teaching and learning activities are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
The department has encouraged learners, educators, and school communities to commemorate the occasion in a safe and responsible manner while reflecting on the significance of the milestone.
The DBE further emphasized the importance of a smooth return to school on 17 June to ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption as the academic term progresses toward its scheduled closure on 26 June 2026.
The department reiterated its commitment to maintaining the academic programme while honouring one of the most significant moments in South Africa’s history.
