A joint intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service's Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and CapeNature has resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old suspect for the illegal possession of venomous scorpions.
He was arrested on Friday, 12 June 2026, at Cape Town International Airport after authorities acted on information indicating that a man was in possession of scorpions at the airport.
In a statement police said, officers obtained a description of the suspect and successfully located and apprehended him. A search of his luggage uncovered 150 live venomous scorpions hidden among his clothing.
The suspect was arrested under the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance for being in possession of a wild animal without the necessary authorization. Authorities have not yet determined the monetary value of the scorpions.
The rescued scorpions were safely removed and transported to a secure facility for care and safekeeping.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the Bellville Magistrates' Court on Monday, 15 June 2026, where he will face charges relating to the unlawful possession of protected wildlife.
