Explosive audio at the Madlanga Commission claims Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala paid R500,000 to support Senzo Mchunu’s ANC leadership campaign and made further cash payments to senior police officials. The revelations raise fresh concerns about corruption at the intersection of politics and law enforcement.
Shocking audio recordings played at the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday allege that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu received R500,000 from businessman Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala to fund his ANC leadership bid.
The recordings, presented via Witness C, suggest that Matlala also made additional cash payments to senior police officials, exposing potential collusion between political figures and law enforcement.
According to the testimony, Matlala facilitated the R500,000 payment through his company Gaolatlhe, covering campaign logistics, flights, and event costs. He also claims to have given R300,000 as a “wedding donation” to Lt‑Gen Shadrack Sibiya and handed over R200,000 in cash, left in a dustbin at an office, implying covert and illicit transactions.
Matlala alleges that tensions arose after he refused Mchunu’s request to fabricate a criminal case. He claims the minister retaliated by cancelling his R360 million SAPS health-services contract, demonstrating the high stakes and potential abuse of power.
Former national police commissioner Riah Phiyega has denied ever meeting Matlala, calling the allegations fabricated. Despite denials, the audio exposes a troubling mix of political financing and police interference, highlighting the critical role of the Madlanga Commission in investigating corruption and accountability within South Africa’s security and political structures.
