The shooting of one of the witnesses, who recently testified at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, has once again raised concerns about the safety of key figures involved in ongoing investigations into serious allegations of police misconduct.
In a shocking turn of events, the South African Police Services (SAPS) confirmed that a witness who recently testified at the Madlanga Commission has been fatally shot.
The witness was shot outside his Brakpan home. It is alleged that gunmen opened fire on him as he was getting into his car. His wife and children witnessed the shooting. Details surrounding the alleged shooting remain sparse as authorities begin their investigation.
National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe announced the tragic news, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
"Witness in the Madlanga Commission shot dead. SAPS management heading to the scene," Mathe stated, revealing that she was on route to the crime scene as she made the announcement.
This week, police minister, Senzo Mchunu, following the revelations made by KZN Provincial Police Commissioner, LT General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July, faced scrutiny and grilling over his role in disbanding the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Mchunu told the commission that national police commissioner Fannie Masemola, with whom he confirmed having “a good working relationship”, should have been the first to give direction on the future of the SAPS Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
