Uber is planning a major move into electric mobility in South Africa with a pilot of 200 BYD EVs set to launch in Johannesburg in 2025. The initiative reflects a broader global partnership with BYD that aims to make EVs more accessible to ride‑hailing drivers through financing and fleet incentives.
Uber is accelerating its shift to electric mobility in South Africa through a high‑profile partnership with Chinese EV maker BYD. As part of a global agreement, Uber and BYD intend to roll out 200 electric vehicles in Johannesburg during a pilot phase in 2025.
This move aligns with Uber’s broader commitment to sustainability and its global target of transitioning to a net-zero emissions platform by 2040. The deal is structured to make EV ownership more accessible for its driver‑partners, offering favourable financing, leasing, and maintenance terms.
In South Africa, Uber has a strong track record in green mobility: its “UberGREEN” programme and partnerships with local EV initiatives underscore a longer-term strategy to build cleaner urban transport.
The pilot could be a watershed moment for EV adoption within the local ride-hailing industry. By helping drivers switch to electric cars, Uber is not only cutting emissions but also giving them access to newer, more efficient vehicles and lower running costs.
