Dube Hostel attack during MK Party event

A shooting at Dube Hostel in Soweto during an MK Party recruitment drive left one person dead and two others injured, with police opening murder and attempted murder cases. MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the party is cooperating fully with authorities and condemned the attack, urging members to refrain from retaliatory violence.

A tragic shooting occurred at Dube Hostel in Soweto on Sunday afternoon during a recruitment drive by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), leaving one person dead and two others injured. The incident is under investigation, with both attempted murder and murder cases opened at Meadowlands police station.

According to the MK Party, the deceased, identified as “Cde Nzuza”, was shot multiple times while returning from taking the injured to the hospital and opening a case at the Meadowlands police station. Nzuza was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other members, “Cde Virginia” and “Cde Mabasa”, were also shot during the incident. Virginia received treatment at Bara Hospital and was discharged later in the evening, while Mabasa remains in critical condition.

MK Party National Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the party was cooperating fully with authorities. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Cde Nzuza and support to the families of the injured members. The party will work with SAPS to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served,” Ndhlela said.

The MK Party condemned the attack and stated there would be no tolerance for political violence. “There will be no ‘no-go zones’ in Gauteng or anywhere else in the country. We will not yield to acts of political intolerance and intimidation,” Ndhlela said. The party also said it would formally report the violence to both the South African Police Service and the Electoral Commission.

The shooting occurred against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by political parties to recruit and mobilise supporters ahead of upcoming activities. The MK Party emphasised that all members and supporters should refrain from retaliating against members of other political parties, describing the act as cowardly.

“The country has endured a long and painful journey from the days of political violence in trains, hostels, and communities. We refuse to allow a return to that era at the hands of individuals who disregard democracy,” Ndhlela said. He added that the MK Party’s mission remains a peaceful revolution dedicated to the liberation of black people, advancing equality, dignity, and freedom for all.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation. The MK Party also expressed appreciation for the efforts of medical personnel and police in responding to the incident.

Further updates are expected as the situation develops and more information becomes available from police and hospital sources. The party has assured the public and its members that it will continue to monitor the safety of all its supporters and take all necessary measures to prevent further incidents.

The shooting has raised concerns over political safety during party activities in Gauteng, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining security during community and political events.
