Two senior SAPS officers and civilian nabbed over alleged precious metals crimes
Two senior South African Police Service officers and a civilian have been arrested in connection with the alleged illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals following an intensive investigation by Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of two senior officers and a civilian allegedly linked to illicit precious metals transactions, corruption and related offences.
In a statement on Sunday police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the suspects were arrested over the weekend after Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS) conducted an investigation into allegations involving the unlawful trade of precious metals.
Police said the suspects were arrested through the execution of a J50 warrant of arrest.
The arrests form part of broader law enforcement efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal trade of precious minerals and corruption in South Africa.
The three suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They are expected to face charges including unlawful dealing in precious metals, corruption, defeating the ends of justice and contravention of legislation regulating precious metals in the country.
Mathe said investigations into the matter are continuing.
