Two men linked to firearms seen in a viral social media video in which women were allegedly seen recklessly and negligently handling guns have been arrested.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement that Gauteng Crime Intelligence launched a tracing operation after the video began circulating online. The operation led police to Tembisa, Gauteng, where the suspects were found and arrested.
Police confirmed that the firearms seen in the video were seized and preliminary investigations indicate that the weapons are unlicensed.
During the operation, officers also discovered that the suspects were in possession of a hijacked vehicle.
The suspects, aged 21 and 34, are facing charges relating to the contravention of the Firearms Control Act, illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.
Police investigations are continuing as authorities work to trace the women seen in the viral video allegedly handling the firearms recklessly.
Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, praised Gauteng Crime Intelligence for their swift response in tracking down the suspects.
Dimpane said the arrests send a strong warning that the reckless handling and public display of firearms will not be tolerated and that police will act decisively against those who break the law.
Police also warned members of the public that reckless handling and display of firearms endangers lives and constitutes a serious criminal offence.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court next week.
