Home Affairs expands Smart ID services through banks
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says Smart ID replacement services are now available at 167 bank branches nationwide, with plans to expand to 750 branches by the end of 2026.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says the department has increased access to Smart ID replacement services by 47% in just two months through its digital partnership with banks.
Speaking during the Home Affairs Budget Vote in Parliament, Schreiber said 167 bank branches across South Africa now offer Smart ID replacement services, with more branches being added weekly.
He said the fully digital system allows citizens to apply for IDs within minutes without paperwork or bookings. More than 118 000 Smart ID applications have already been processed, including replacements and conversions from Green ID books.
Schreiber also announced plans to introduce first-time Smart ID and passport applications through banks, as well as doorstep delivery services for IDs and passports.
The minister said the department’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has processed over 75 000 visa applications, blocking nearly 4 500 illegitimate travellers from entering South Africa.
He added that draft regulations for the new Digital ID system are open for public comment until 6 June 2026, while anti-corruption operations within Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority continue to intensify.
