Tshwane crushes unclaimed impounded vehicles to ease pound congestion

The Tshwane Metro Police Department has carried out its first official vehicle crushing operation, disposing of long-unclaimed impounded vehicles to free up storage space and improve enforcement operations.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has conducted its first-ever official vehicle crushing operation, disposing of unclaimed impounded vehicles in a move aimed at easing congestion at municipal pounds and improving law enforcement efficiency.

The operation took place on Friday at the Akasia Workshop in Klerksoord and targeted vehicles that had remained unclaimed long after the legally permitted storage period had expired.

In a statement City of Tshwane said that all legal notification procedures were followed before the vehicles were destroyed.

MMC for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee, praised the TMPD Pound and Abandoned Section and Chief of Police Commissioner Yolanda Faro for successfully carrying out the operation.

He described the initiative as a significant step towards addressing longstanding congestion at municipal pounds, which has affected the department's ability to efficiently manage impounded vehicles.

Coetzee said the operation was conducted in accordance with the City's governance guidelines and was carried out in a transparent and fully auditable manner to ensure legal compliance and accountability.

He added that clearing space at municipal pounds would enable the TMPD to process newly impounded vehicles more efficiently, reducing operational bottlenecks that have previously hindered enforcement efforts.

The MMC said the additional capacity would strengthen the city's by-law and road traffic enforcement by allowing officers to act more effectively against unlawful conduct across Tshwane.

Coetzee expressed hope that vehicle crushing operations would become a regular part of the TMPD's operations as part of the city's commitment to efficient, transparent and accountable municipal governance.
