Six people were killed and three others injured in a driveby shooting in Reiger Park, Boksburg, on Saturday afternoon. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who opened fire on a group of people in what authorities described as a senseless act of violence.
Six people were killed and three others injured in a driveby shooting in Reiger Park, Boksburg, on Saturday afternoon. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects while the African Transformation Movement condemned the attack and called for stronger community cooperation to combat violent crime.
According to the Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS), two vehicles, a silver Polo and a black Polo, drove into the area and began shooting randomly. The motive for the attack is not yet known. The victims are three males and three females.
Police said the shooting took place on Saturday, 01 November 2025. Community members alerted authorities after gunfire erupted, sending residents running for cover.
Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana said the SAPS has mobilised additional resources to investigate the incident and track down those responsible.
“We have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in this horrific shooting. Our investigators are on the ground collecting evidence and following leads to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Kekana.
He called on the community of Reiger Park to assist the police by providing any information that could help in solving the case.
“We urge residents to allow law enforcement to do its job and to work with us. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPSApp to report anonymously,” Kekana said.
He said the SAPS would continue to strengthen its presence in crime-affected areas to prevent similar incidents.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy. The party’s national spokesperson, Zama Ntshona, said the attack was a heartbreaking reminder of the high levels of violent crime facing communities.
“The African Transformation Movement mourns the tragic loss of lives in the Reiger Park shooting. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the six individuals who lost their lives, and we wish a speedy recovery to the three others who were injured,” Ntshona said.
He said the ATM welcomed the swift response from SAPS and commended the Acting Provincial Commissioner for deploying resources to pursue the suspects.
“We call on the people of Reiger Park to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities by providing any information that may assist in bringing these criminals to justice. Such acts of lawlessness undermine the safety and dignity of our people and cannot be tolerated,” she said.
Ntshona added that the ATM remained committed to pushing for stronger community policing and urgent interventions to address violent crime.
On social media, South Africans reacted with anger and frustration, with many users calling for stronger action to curb gun violence.
One user on X wrote, “We need a military presence on our streets, borders and outside schools to reduce crime immediately. Our military is under-utilised and can help make our country safer.”
Another user commented, “Probably the worst place in the East Rand. Children as young as six play and smoke hubbly at 20:00 in the streets. I have never seen such hopelessness.”
Another user said, “South Africa has a huge gun problem, which needs to be solved immediately.”
Member of Parliament Dereleen James also posted, highlighting that the Reiger Park incident followed another mass shooting in Mitchells Plain, Western Cape, where six people were shot.
Police investigations continue, and no arrests have been made.
