SARS dismisses claims of alleged data breach
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has dismissed social media claims alleging that its systems were breached, saying there is currently no evidence of any compromise to its digital platforms.
The South African Revenue Service has rejected reports circulating on social media claiming that its systems have been hacked or compromised.
In a statement issued on Monday, SARS said it had conducted a thorough investigation after becoming aware of online posts alleging a data breach.
The revenue service said that the claims are “false and unsubstantiated”, adding that there is currently no evidence suggesting that its systems have been compromised.
SARS said it continuously monitors its digital environment for suspicious activity and remains committed to protecting taxpayer information.
The organisation described the security of taxpayer data and digital platforms as a core responsibility, saying this forms part of its broader goal of building a smart and modern institution with integrity.
SARS also urged members of the public not to share unverified information or rely on unofficial sources.
The revenue service further warned taxpayers and traders to remain alert to scams and phishing attempts, especially messages falsely claiming to be from SARS.
Members of the public have been encouraged to rely on official SARS communication channels for accurate information.
