According to police, solid intelligence points to a group of individuals who have been attending court proceedings “with the sole purpose of looking for an opportunity to eliminate key role players on the side of the State.”
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a case of conspiracy to commit murder has been registered and is under investigation in relation to the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
According to police, solid intelligence points to a group of individuals who have been attending court proceedings “with the sole purpose of looking for an opportunity to eliminate key role players on the side of the State.”
On Tuesday morning, officers removed a group of men from the public gallery inside the High Court in Pretoria. SAPS said the individuals were taken in for further questioning and profiling as part of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.
“Security has been heightened and intelligence is on high alert. All steps taken are to ensure we eliminate the threats as well as to protect and save lives,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
The incident unfolded as the State was addressing the court. The trial was subsequently adjourned until Wednesday to allow counsel to deal with the new developments.
