The coalition motion to remove Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero was abruptly withdrawn just hours before the scheduled council vote. Coalition partners say new talks and promises of reforms prompted the decision, tentatively defusing a political showdown for now.
A motion of no confidence aimed at ousting Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has been withdrawn at the last minute by the coalition parties who tabled it. The move came mere hours before councillors were due to vote.
The motion had been put forward by Al Jama-ah and seconded by the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM).
According to coalition insiders, the decision to withdraw followed a closed-door meeting in which Mayor Morero reportedly committed to new reforms and agreed to engage in consultations to address governance and service-delivery concerns raised by the parties.
In a statement to the council, Al Jama-ah’s councillor said the mayor had presented proposals deemed sufficient to satisfy the immediate grievances, prompting the withdrawal.
The motion had accused Morero of poor leadership, failing service delivery and inadequate consultation with smaller coalition partners. Had it gone ahead, it would have marked the second time in 2025 that the mayor faced a removal attempt the previous motion in June failed when the ruling coalition managed to hold together.
