SANTACO calls for immigration reform through legal channels, warns against disruptive protests

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has called for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and improved border management, while warning that planned anti-illegal immigration demonstrations must not disrupt transport services, economic activity, or the movement of people and goods.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has urged citizens and organisations advocating for immigration reform to pursue their concerns through lawful and peaceful means, warning that any actions disrupting transport operations or economic activity could have far-reaching consequences for the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, SANTACO said it supports the principle that all migration into South Africa should occur through legal channels and in compliance with the country's immigration laws and regulations.

The council acknowledged growing public concern around illegal immigration and recognised the constitutional right of citizens to express their views and advocate for policy changes.

"SANTACO supports the principle that all migration into South Africa should take place through lawful channels and in accordance with the country's immigration laws and regulations," the organisation said.

The taxi body, however, expressed concern about calls for mass action that could interfere with transport operations or restrict the movement of people.

"The Council believes that any calls for immigration reform or stricter enforcement of existing laws must be pursued through lawful, peaceful, and constructive means," SANTACO said.

The organisation said South Africa's transport sector remains a vital component of the economy, connecting workers, learners, patients and consumers to essential services and opportunities.

"The taxi industry's business is the movement of people. Every day, millions of commuters rely on taxi services to access opportunities and essential services," SANTACO said.

SANTACO warned that disruptions to transport services could negatively affect businesses, trade, tourism, regional integration and economic growth.

"As a result, any action that creates uncertainty, discourages travel, disrupts transport services, or projects instability may have unintended consequences not only for the transport sector but also for tourism, trade, regional integration, and broader economic growth," the council said.

The organisation further called on government to strengthen border management systems, improve immigration administration processes and ensure immigration laws are applied fairly and consistently.

"SANTACO remains committed to supporting initiatives that uphold the rule of law while protecting the transport sector's contribution to economic development and the broader interests of the nation," the statement concluded.
