SADC extends Joyce Banda's mediation role in Madagascar
SADC has extended former Malawian president Joyce Banda's mediation mandate and approved a liaison office in Antananarivo as efforts to restore constitutional order in Madagascar gain momentum.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in the region by extending the mediation mandate of former Malawian president Joyce Banda to continue facilitating dialogue aimed at restoring constitutional order in Madagascar.
The decision was taken during an Extraordinary Virtual SADC Summit held on Monday, where leaders also approved the establishment of a SADC liaison office in Antananarivo to strengthen coordination and support the implementation of the peace process.
SADC Chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa called for an inclusive national dialogue involving the government, political parties, civil society, youth, women and traditional leaders. He emphasised that transparency, trust and broad participation are essential to securing a lasting political settlement.
Second Vice President Enoch Chihana said the extension of Dr Banda's mandate demonstrates SADC's confidence in her ongoing shuttle diplomacy. He added that the summit encouraged all parties to engage constructively, including facilitating the release of political detainees and the return of political exiles to help build trust and advance the peace process.
