Foreign national dies after alleged jump from Durban building
Police have opened an inquest after a foreign national allegedly jumped from the eighth floor of a building in Durban, while authorities verify the immigration status of the deceased and another individual.
Police in Durban have launched an inquest following the death of a foreign national who allegedly jumped from the eighth floor of a building on Margaret Mncadi Avenue on Monday night.
In a statement on Tuesday the South African Police Service (SAPS) said officers responded to the scene after reports of the incident. Preliminary investigations indicate that three foreign nationals had allegedly broken into a storage facility in the building, where they had reportedly been staying for three days.
Police said the group allegedly heard noises on Monday night and believed they were being targeted. One of the men allegedly jumped from the eighth floor, sustaining fatal injuries, including broken limbs, and was declared dead at the scene.
A second individual reportedly fled, while a third remained at the scene when police arrived.
Police have opened an inquest docket to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police also confirmed that the immigration status of the deceased and the remaining individual is being verified.
