Public broadcaster takes action after testimony links journalist to payment for controversial blogger’s contact details
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has placed political reporter Natasha Phiri on precautionary suspension following testimony presented at the Madlanga Commission.
The decision comes after Sergeant Fannie Nkosi told the commission on Monday that he paid Phiri R500 in exchange for providing contact details belonging to Musa Khawula.
In a statement, the public broadcaster reaffirmed its commitment to ethical conduct, saying it expects all employees to uphold its core values. “The SABC always encourages its staff members to uphold the corporation’s values of trust, respect and integrity in all their interactions".
Phiri’s suspension is described as precautionary, pending further internal processes by the SABC.
