Cat Matlala
Former National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has strongly denied testimony before the Madlanga Commission linking her to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Phiyega rejected claims that Matlala was at her home before his arrest, calling the allegation false and requesting a formal chance to challenge it.
Former National Police Commissioner Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega has issued a strong denial of claims made before the Madlanga Commission of enquiry, rejecting testimony that allegedly connects her to Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.
In a formal statement addressed to the Commission’s Secretary, Phiyega expressed shock at testimony from a witness identified as “C,” who claimed that during Matlala’s arrest on 14 May 2025, he was said to have come from Phiyega’s residence.
On Thursday, Witness C had told the commission that on 14 May they started surveying Matlala's movements and arrested him in Midrand.
Matlala allegedly told them he was coming from Riah Phiyega's house.
However, Riah Phiyega said she was stunned to hear the testimony.
“I categorically and emphatically deny that Matlala was ever present at my
home on that date - or at any other time. The assertion made by Witness C is
entirely false, and I reject it in its entirety. I hereby request a formal opportunity
to challenge this testimony through the appropriate legal or procedural channels,” said the statement.
Phiyega stated that she has never met Matlala and described the allegation as a “fabrication” that must be urgently addressed.
She has also requested formal guidance on how to dispute and refute the claims through legal or procedural means.
Matlala also alleged that he was connected to top police officials name-dropping and making startling revelations about their relationship.
Witness C also detailed how Matlala allegedly funded suspended National deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya’s lavish lifestyle, made cash drop-offs at his homes, and assisted him with personal purchases.
According to the witness, Matlala claimed there were several occasions where he gave Sibiya large amounts of cash. In one instance, when Sibiya’s son got married, Matlala said he was invited to the celebration and gave Sibiya R300,000 in support of the event.
