Ramaphosa to launch new HIV prevention injection in South Africa
President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially launch the rollout of Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking twice-yearly HIV prevention injection, in Secunda, Mpumalanga, as South Africa intensifies efforts to curb new HIV infections.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officially launch the national rollout of Lenacapavir, a new long-acting injectable medication for HIV prevention, during an event in Secunda, Mpumalanga, on Friday.
The launch marks a major milestone in South Africa's ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS and is aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent new HIV infections across the country.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) treatment administered twice a year, offering an alternative to daily HIV prevention medication. Health authorities believe the innovation could significantly improve adherence and expand access to HIV prevention services.
The rollout forms part of a collaborative effort involving government, civil society organisations, development partners, donors and the private sector, all working towards ending HIV as a public health threat in South Africa.
Ramaphosa will be joined by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, provincial health MECs, leaders from the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), development partners and donors, including the Global Fund.
The launch event will take place at the Lilian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda and is expected to highlight South Africa's commitment to advancing innovative healthcare solutions and reducing the burden of HIV/AIDS.
