President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at the 2026 Human Rights Day commemoration in Kimberley, highlighting South Africa’s ongoing commitment to equality, human dignity, and the protection of rights.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 National Commemoration of Human Rights Day on Saturday, 21 March, at Ar Abass Stadium in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
This year’s Human Rights Month is observed under the theme: “A Legacy of Courage: Protecting Rights, Preserving Humanity.” Since the dawn of democracy, Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on 21 March, reflects South Africa’s journey toward a free, equal, and democratic society.
The day holds special significance for historically marginalised communities and honours the activists and supporters who sacrificed for freedom. It underscores the importance of protecting human dignity and advancing equality in all areas of society.
The 2026 theme also marks 30 years since the adoption of South Africa’s Constitution. Human Rights Month seeks to:
Recognise the courage of individuals and collective efforts in defending human rights.
Reflect on the enduring legacy of the liberation struggle, including the Sharpeville Massacre.
Promote awareness of constitutional rights and encourage their active protection.
Reinforce the Constitution as a living document guiding collective responsibility and courageous action.
Inspire ongoing efforts to overcome systemic inequalities and build a just, equitable, and rights-respecting society.
Human Rights Month also serves as a platform to strengthen social cohesion, nation-building, national identity, socio-economic development, and to combat racism, xenophobia, and related intolerances.
Ahead of the formal proceedings, President Ramaphosa will visit Re Tlameleng Special Needs School to unveil the 2026 Human Rights Day legacy project, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive development and disability empowerment.
