With the retention of jobs in the mining sector, continuously being on the line, the revival of Optimum Colliery by Liberty Coal, and the promise of 500 new jobs, have set the stage for job creation and economic revitalisation in the Mpumalanga region.
The recent appointment of Liberty Mine Services (LMS) as the principal mining contractor at the Mpumalanga-based Optimum Colliery marks an important milestone in the revival of one of South Africa's key energy producers.
Two months after the investment decision, the re-opening of Optimum Coal mine is set to breathe new life into both Eskom’s electricity generation capabilities and the local economy by restoring employment for over 500 workers previously associated with the mine.
Liberty Coal, which owns and operates Optimum Colliery, announced the successful transfer of approximately 540 employees from Salaria (Pty) Ltd, a company in business rescue, in accordance with Section 197 of the Labour Relations Act. This transfer illustrates a commitment to stabilising the workforce and ensures continuity as the mine embarks on an ambitious expansion plan.
Looking ahead to 2026, LMS intends to implement a progressive employment drive that is anticipated to generate an additional 500 jobs. The mine's ongoing refurbishment, coupled with several major capital projects, is expected to engage a workforce of around 2,000 individuals by the end of the year. This influx of job opportunities will not only benefit direct employees but also invigorate local businesses through increased demand for services and supplies.
At the heart of this transition is a state-of-the-art fleet of heavy-duty mining machinery, the first consignment of which was delivered in December 2025 amid much fanfare. By March 2026, a highly anticipated Marion 8200 MDO3 dragline, restored at a staggering cost of R400 million, will begin operations, enhancing the mine’s productivity even further.
Hlayiseka Chauke, chief executive of Liberty Coal, expressed optimism about the future, describing the partnership with LMS as a pivotal moment for the mine. “This appointment represents a new and exciting chapter in the mine’s fortunes,” he remarked, adding that it may serve as “the most significant catalyst” for restoring Optimum Colliery to its historic standing as a leading coal producer in South Africa.
However, the journey to recovery is not without its challenges. The once Gupta family-owned Optimum Coal Mine has faced controversy in the past. To navigate through these turbulent waters, Liberty Coal has forged a cooperative relationship with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), resulting in a court settlement that allows the mine to exit business rescue and operate as a going concern once more.
As Liberty Coal embarks on this transformative journey, the renewed operations at Optimum Colliery are expected to be a game-changer for renewable energy production, local job markets, and South Africa’s coal export capacity, promising brighter prospects for both the community and the energy sector.
