NPA to withdraw charges against crime intelligence boss Khumalo
The National Prosecuting Authority is seeking an earlier court date to formally withdraw charges against Crime Intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele and others, with the matter currently set down for 3 September.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is expected to formally withdraw charges against Crime Intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele and others.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that the authority is seeking to bring the matter before court earlier, potentially this week, to formally withdraw the charges.
The decision to withdraw the case has already been taken on the instruction of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP). The remaining step is for the withdrawal to be formally recorded in court.
The matter is currently scheduled to return to court on 3 September, but the NPA's legal team is trying to secure an earlier date.
Kganyago said this would depend on whether the lawyers representing the affected parties agree to the earlier date and whether the necessary people are available to appear in court.
If an earlier date cannot be arranged, the matter will proceed on 3 September as initially scheduled.
The NPA also indicated that the withdrawal could proceed for the majority of accused persons who are present in court, even if not all the affected parties are able to attend.
