South Africa’s consumer watchdog warns that hundreds of Ford vans may emit hazardous gas due to battery faults, urging owners to seek free repairs immediately.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall affecting certain 2022–2026 Ford Transit and Transit/Tourneo Custom passenger vehicles. The move follows a notification from Ford Motor Company’s South African manufacturing division, which identified a potential defect in some vehicles sold nationwide between 2021 and 2025. A total of 582 units are impacted.
According to the supplier, the issue is linked to the H7 AGM battery installed in these vehicles. Under certain conditions, the battery may emit an acidic, rotten egg-like smell, produce a hissing sound, or release visible gas. In some cases, occupants may also notice unusual warmth around the seat area.
The supplier further warned that elevated temperatures could trigger a chemical reaction in the battery, potentially generating hydrogen sulphide gas. Prolonged exposure to this gas may pose health risks to passengers.
Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised dealership for inspection and repairs, which will be carried out at no cost. Consumers seeking further information can contact the NCC via email.
