As the countdown to the Mzansi Reel Film Festival festival begins, the public is encouraged to join and support this vibrant initiative that promises to uplift the narratives of South Africa’s emerging filmmakers while celebrating the rich tapestry of talent within the nation.
The Mzansi Reel Film Festival is poised to make a significant return this December, bringing a vibrant celebration of filmmaking directly to the heart of eThekwini. Taking place from 14th to 16th December 2025, the festival aims to immerse participants in the world of film and digital content creation while focusing on empowering the youth and women across the country, particularly those in hostel communities.
Hosted by Thando Shozi, a respected figure in the television and film industry, the festival will unfold in several dynamic venues, including the Clermont K.K Library, Clermont K.K Community Hall, and the Clairwood Sports Ground in Durban. Under the theme “Embracing the Future of Television,” the event promises to connect aspiring filmmakers with industry professionals, serving as a vital bridge for those looking to turn their creative aspirations into reality.
The festival’s founder, Andile Buwa, expressed the organisation's dedication to fostering talent within underrepresented communities. “As the world’s content viewing patterns keep changing, our goal is to create a platform where young aspiring filmmakers, women, and persons with disabilities can showcase their work, learn from industry experts, and connect with potential collaborators,” Buwa stated.
“By taking the festival to communities in Clermont and Clairwood, we're ensuring that talented youth have access to resources, networking opportunities, and exposure, regardless of their background.”
The three-day programme promises an enriching experience tailored for burgeoning creators. Kicking off at Clermont K.K Library, attendees can look forward to workshops addressing the evolution of television and mobile content creation. Topics include “The Evolution of TV: From Traditional to Digital” and “Creating Content for Mobile and TV”—sessions designed to provide attendees with insights into the shifting dimensions of the entertainment industry.
Day two will focus on digital online monetization, exploring avenues for emerging filmmakers to market their content effectively. Workshops will delve into monetization strategies and digital distribution, empowering creators with the knowledge to navigate and succeed in today’s digital landscape.
The festival will culminate in a grand outdoor screening on 16th December, showcasing an exclusive selection of films from the 12th edition of the African Emerging Filmmakers Awards. Viewers can anticipate engaging narratives like “Thulebona” by Lwazi Duma, “Ukhumbizile” by Simanga Cibane, and more local cinematic gems that reflect the diverse stories of rural communities.
Supported by the KZN Tourism and Film Authority and the Durban Film Office, the Mzansi Reel Film Festival is more than a mere celebration of films; it is a campaign aimed at democratising access to film education and opportunities, bolstering local talent, and fostering entrepreneurship in the film industry.
