Mkhwanazi and Lerutla granted R30,000 bail each in corruption case
Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla have been granted bail, with strict conditions imposed as their corruption case is postponed to May.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla have been granted R30,000 bail each by the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
The two face charges of corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice, stemming from allegations that they orchestrated a court impersonation scheme and shared R400,000.
Despite the State opposing their release on the grounds that they could interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations or evade trial, on Tuesday the court ruled in favour of bail, imposing strict conditions.
As part of their bail terms, both accused have been ordered to surrender their passports and are prohibited from contacting State witness Thabang Tsotetsi.
The matter has been postponed to 13 May 2026, when it is expected to be transferred to the regional court for further proceedings.
