Matlala matter postponed as defence seeks further evidence disclosure
The case against alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been postponed to Wednesday after his legal team requested access to additional evidence, including witness statements, CCTV footage and police tracking records.
The case against alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his co-accused has been postponed to Wednesday following a brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Matlala's legal team is seeking an order compelling the State to disclose certain witness statements, South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) CCTV footage, and police vehicle tracking records that they argue are necessary for the preparation of the defence case.
Matlala and his co-accused face 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, fraud and money laundering. The charges relate to three alleged shooting incidents that took place between August 2022 and January 2024.
According to the State, Matlala allegedly orchestrated attacks targeting his former girlfriend, actress and influencer Tebogo Thobejane, DJ Vettys, and Mpumalanga businessman Joe Sibanyoni during the period in question.
He is charged alongside his wife, Tsakane Matlala, as well as Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana and Nthabiseng Nzama.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has maintained that it is ready to proceed with the matter. Gauteng NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole previously confirmed that the prosecution remains fully prepared for the trial, which is scheduled to commence on 20 July 2026.
The matter is expected to return to court on Wednesday.
