From screen to reality: How “The Polygamist” sparked a health conversation beyond entertainment

Netflix's hit drama The Polygamist has captivated audiences with its gripping storyline and unforgettable characters. But while viewers debate the fate of Jonasi Gomora, health officials are using the show's powerful ending to deliver a life-saving message about HIV, STI prevention and responsible relationships.

When Netflix released The Polygamist, few could have predicted the cultural phenomenon it would become. Adapted from the novel by Sue Nyathi, the 22-episode drama quickly dominated social media timelines, WhatsApp groups and watercooler conversations.

At the centre of the buzz was one man: Jonasi Gomora. Portrayed by actor Sdumo Mtshali, Jonasi is a wealthy construction tycoon whose charisma, ambition and impulsive choices leave a trail of heartbreak and destruction.

Alongside a talented cast featuring Gugu Gumede as Joyce Gomora, Kwanele Mthethwa as Matipa Nkosi and Celeste Ntuli as Essie, the series explores love, betrayal, power and the consequences of unchecked desire.

What made Jonasi resonate so deeply with viewers was not that he was extraordinary, but that he felt familiar. Many viewers recognised aspects of people they know in his character.

Some saw former partners. Others saw family members, friends or even themselves reflected in his choices.

While audiences were still unpacking the dramatic ending, the Gauteng Department of Health stepped into the conversation with a sobering reminder: Jonasi's story may be fiction, but the health risks associated with multiple sexual partners and unprotected sex are very real.

"You've seen The Polygamist and saw how Jonasi went out... just know, that is not just TV drama, it is real-life consequences," the department said in a social media post.

Using the popularity of the show as a teaching moment, health officials highlighted the dangers of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, warning that having multiple partners without protection significantly increases health risks.

The department also stressed the importance of HIV testing, treatment adherence and prevention methods such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Lenacapavir.

However, officials reminded the public that condoms remain essential in protecting against STIs such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes and chlamydia, while also preventing unwanted pregnancies.

The message was particularly aimed at those who may have interrupted their HIV treatment. Health authorities encouraged individuals to return to care, restart treatment and work towards achieving an undetectable viral load, which allows people living with HIV to live healthier lives and prevents transmission of the virus to others.

In many ways, The Polygamist has become more than just a television series. It has evolved into a national conversation about relationships, accountability and health.

For some viewers, Jonasi Gomora was simply a compelling character. For others, his story became a reminder that the choices people make behind closed doors can have lasting consequences.

As the credits roll on one of South Africa's most talked-about dramas, the conversation it sparked appears far from over.
