A man believed to be in his early 30s was found dead next to a river in Olievenhoutbosch Extension 19 on Sunday morning, following a reported drowning incident.
According to the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department, Fire and Rescue Services received a call at about 08:02 reporting a drowning along Mathotse Street, near Oripile Primary School. Firefighters from Heuweloord Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.
On arrival, emergency responders discovered the lifeless body of a man lying next to a flowing river. Members of the Community Emergency Response Team assessed the individual and confirmed that there were no signs of life. The scene was then handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. No further details have been released as the matter remains under police investigation.
The incident comes amid ongoing heavy rains across Tshwane, which have led to an increase in flooding-related emergencies.
Emergency services have urged residents to remain vigilant and to avoid crossing flowing or stagnant water, particularly where water levels reach knee height or higher, as this poses a serious risk of drowning.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies to the Emergency Control Centre by calling 107 (toll-free) or alternatively 012 358 6300 or 012 358 6400. Callers are advised to remain calm, provide clear information, share the correct location, and leave a contact number for follow-up.
