The Madlanga Commission has raised concerns that Julius Mkhwanazi may have misled proceedings about his mother’s death, warning he could face contempt charges if found to have lied.
The Madlanga Commission has warned that suspended EMPD deputy chief, Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi could face serious consequences if it is established that he provided false information to the inquiry.
Commission member Advocate Baloyi warned Mkhwanazi that he may be held in contempt should the Madlanga Commission find that he lied about the circumstances surrounding his absence from proceedings.
This comes after Mkhwanazi failed to attend a scheduled appearance, citing the death of his mother as the reason. However, the commission has questioned the accuracy of this claim, suggesting he may have misled the inquiry to avoid attending.
In his defence, Mkhwanazi insisted he did not lie, maintaining that the person he buried was his mother. He told the commission that although the deceased was his stepmother, she was married to his father and therefore regarded as his mother.
“I have no reason to lie. The deceased was my mother,” Mkhwanazi said during proceedings.
The commission continues to assess the matter, with Baloyi emphasising that providing false testimony under oath undermines the integrity of the inquiry and may result in legal consequences.
