KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will hold a media briefing to respond to allegations made against him at the Madlanga Commission by former officer James Scharnick. The briefing follows his explosive July statement that implicated suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will on Thursday hold a media briefing to address matters arising from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, including issues linked to former police officer James Stuart Scharnick.
The South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal said the briefing will provide context to investigations that emerged during the commission’s hearings, particularly those related to Scharnick’s criminal record and firearm licence. The police confirmed that some of the cases involving Scharnick were opened and investigated in KwaZulu-Natal.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the briefing would ensure clarity and transparency around the investigations mentioned before the commission.
“Police in KwaZulu-Natal hereby invite the media to a briefing that will give context to some of the investigation matters that came out of the Madlanga Commission, especially those related to James Stuart Scharnick’s criminal record and firearm licence because some of the cases were opened and investigated by police in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
The briefing will take place on Thursday, 13 November 2025, at 13h00 on the 18th Floor Auditorium at the SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Headquarters in Bram Fischer Road, Durban.
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi is expected to respond directly to allegations made against him during testimony at the commission, where Scharnick claimed misconduct and irregularities in police investigations.
This will be Mkhwanazi’s first media appearance since his explosive July 6 briefing, where he revealed information that implicated suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. Those revelations sparked national debate and heightened scrutiny on senior police leadership.
The upcoming briefing is expected to draw significant media interest as the commissioner addresses the latest developments and reaffirms the province’s commitment to clean and accountable policing.
