Kaizer Chiefs turn to Fernando da Cruz in bid to restore glory

Kaizer Chiefs have unveiled experienced French tactician Fernando da Cruz as their new head coach, handing him the responsibility of leading the club's revival as Amakhosi look to return to the summit of South African football.

Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the appointment of Fernando da Cruz as the club's new head coach on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year.

The French-born coach will assume his duties on 1 July 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Soweto giants as they seek stability and success following a turbulent period.

Da Cruz arrives with impressive credentials, holding a UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in world football. He is no stranger to Naturena, having previously worked with Chiefs during a pre-season programme two years ago.

Most recently, he served as Technical Director of the Moroccan Football Federation, a position he held until the end of June. His experience in both coaching and football development is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the club.

Chiefs turned to Da Cruz following the departure of former coach Nasreddine Nabi in late 2025. Interim coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef guided the team during the transition period before the club settled on its long-term appointment.

The announcement signals the club's intent to rebuild and challenge for major honours after several seasons of inconsistency. Supporters will be hoping Da Cruz can reignite the winning culture that has defined Kaizer Chiefs throughout their storied history.

Speaking on the appointment, the club expressed confidence in Da Cruz's abilities, highlighting his technical expertise, leadership qualities and international experience as key factors behind the decision.

All eyes will now be on the Frenchman as he prepares to take charge of one of South Africa's biggest football institutions, with expectations high that he can guide Amakhosi back to domestic success and continental competitiveness.
